Grim Kino: “Home There… Cinema Here” by Nidal Al Dibs

Nidal al-Dibs screening program “Home There… Cinema Here” opens with a performative storytelling by Nidal himself, developed in collaboration with flutist Hussam Abukhater. Nidal will take us on a journey tracing his own foot steps: Moving between Syria, Russia, Egypt and Norway, we follow him through displacement, exile and attempts to reconstruct a sense of home. The narration reflects on the Damascus Cinema Club, on cinema as a collective space, and on the fragile infrastructures that allow film culture to exist.
In both films presented during the evening, no original score was composed. Instead, melodies drawn from traditional folk songs appear, often carried by wind instruments similar to the flute. Here, the flute is made physically present. Hussam Abukhater accompanies the storytelling live, extending the films’ sonic language into the room and introducing a continuous, breathing score.
The storytelling is translated live from Arabic to English by Nidals partner Laila Hourani.

The evening also includes screenings of Ya Leil Ya Ein (1999) and Homemade Stories (2021). Traditional Syrian drinks and snacks will be served alongside experimental variations. The cinema space is installed specifically for this event.
