Our culinary art laboratory

At GRAC, we see food as an essential artistic medium. Not only in the context of fine dining, but as a field for experimentation, working with taste, smell, texture, and process. As GRAC is rooted in interdisciplinary practice, the kitchen plays a central role in how we design and shape artistic experiences. Our culinary art laboratory is an integrated part of GRAC’s programme, used in performances, exhibitions, and events where food becomes a tool for storytelling and sensory exploration.

The kitchen is also a shared resource. Artists, chefs, and other curious practitioners are welcome to rent the space to experiment with food, drink, and sensory formats.

The laboratory is equipped with:

  • Large refrigeration capacity
  • Traditional and effective oven
  • Combi steam oven
  • A professional vacuum sealer
  • nd a range of kitchen tools for both everyday use and advanced experimentation.

Odderøya lighthouse

Odderøya Lighthouse is part of GRAC’s residency infrastructure and is made available to us during residency periods through a collaboration with Kristiansand Municipality and Agder County.

The lighthouse marks the southernmost point of the cultural axis we work within, stretching from Kristiansands coast in the south to Hovdens mountains in the north. It serves as a base for visiting artists and curators working in Kristiansand, offering a unique setting for both living and working.

Located by the sea, the site combines dramatic coastal landscape with a rich historical atmosphere. It offers a rare sense of calm and focus, while still being situated in the heart of the city, allowing residents to engage with both nature and the local cultural environment.

The site consists of two buildings. The main house includes two bedrooms with a total of five beds, a living room with workspace, and a kitchen. The lighthouse building itself contains two living rooms that can be used for both artistic processes and small-scale presentations, as well as a kitchen and several common areas. The lighthouse building is currently not approved for overnight stays.

Gamle gaard at Hovden

Gamle Gaard is GRAC’s northern base, located at the top of the cultural axis stretching through Agder. The site combines accommodation, exhibition space, and outdoor areas surrounded by nature, offering a unique setting for artistic work and exchange.

The main building is a traditional Setesdal farmstead, originally built in the 18th century in Uppstad and relocated to Hovden in the 1960s. Rich in history and character, it includes a kitchen, common areas, and a fireplace room, as well as a traditional storehouse (stabbur).

In addition, a nearby modern house provides accommodation for resident artists, with capacity for up to 17 people. Together, the site offers both practical facilities and a strong connection to local heritage, landscape, and community.

The sculptural garden

GRAC has access to a large outdoor area with two distinct gardens that can be used for exhibitions and site-specific works.

One garden is an open landscape located across the small stream that once powered the mill. The other is a more enclosed space, surrounded by tall trees, with a quieter and more intimate atmosphere.

Together, the gardens offer unique conditions for working outdoors and invite artists to engage with nature, history, and space as part of their practice.
